This set uses three action layers. In the Default layer, R1 is Dodge and L1 is Staff Spin. L2 is Gourd. If you press Start or Select, the Menu layer will be activated, which reverts all buttons to default controls, except that moving the left joystick to the outside edge will remove the Menu layer. Finally, while holding R2 in Default mode, you will activate the Special layer, which will revert most buttons to normal functions while also holding R2, so that R2-holds (like your Spirit) work normally.
